As a manufacturer, I look at a rearview mirror and see more than just glass. I see a complex assembly of high-precision components. The plastic housing, for example, is incredibly difficult to produce correctly. You might think it's just a simple plastic shell, but the tolerances are extremely tight. It needs to hold the mirror glass perfectly, connect securely to the mounting arm, and, in modern cars, house sensors for auto-dimming features or even cameras. To achieve this, we use a process called injection molding. However, a standard injection molding machine just won't work for these parts. The precision required is too high.
In my experience, the only machines that can reliably produce these parts are located in specific industrial regions. The factories around coastal areas like Fujian and near Shanghai are known for having the advanced, high-precision equipment needed.6 Machines from other areas, like Hebei, for instance, often can't meet the strict automotive standards.7 The manufacturing process itself involves several stages, but the most challenging part is cooling. If the plastic part cools too quickly, too slowly, or unevenly, it can warp or shrink.8 Even a tiny change, less than a millimeter, can mean the part won’t fit correctly, causing rattles or a loose mirror. It takes a lot of engineering to make sure that piece of plastic is perfect every single time.

To add a specific color, we have to add colored powder, or 'colorant,' to the raw plastic pellets.
Here is how that creates a problem. Our injection molding machines run continuously to maintain a stable temperature. To add a custom color for a specific batch, we have to stop the machine. Then, we often have to open the mold to mix in the color powder properly. This interruption is a huge issue. It causes the machine's temperature to fluctuate, which can ruin the first few parts when we restart. More importantly, it interferes with the delicate cooling process. Opening the mold and stopping the cycle can lead to uneven cooling, which might cause ugly color streaks, weak spots in the plastic, or warping. It takes a very skilled team and a top-of-the-line machine to manage this process and produce a perfect, custom-colored part without defects.
